Which player won the first StarCraft II World Championship Series global final in 2012?

The story behind the answer

PartinG won the first StarCraft II World Championship Series global final in 2012.

South Korean Protoss player Won “PartinG” Lee won the inaugural WCS Global Finals at BlizzCon in Anaheim, California. In the final, he defeated fellow South Korean player Jang “Creator” Hyun-woo 4–2. The championship was part of Blizzard’s first unified StarCraft II World Championship Series season.

StarCraft II divides its playable factions into Terran, Zerg, and Protoss. PartinG represented Protoss, a technologically advanced faction known for powerful units, warp-based reinforcement, and strategic timing attacks. His title came during a period when South Korean players dominated the highest level of StarCraft II competition.

The result is distinct from earlier major StarCraft II events such as the 2010 and 2011 GSL seasons. Those tournaments were prestigious, but they were not the first WCS Global Finals. The WCS structure later changed repeatedly, including regional circuits and different championship formats before Blizzard ended the official WCS era after the 2020 season.
