Which player won a record nine Wimbledon ladies' singles titles?

The story behind the answer

Martina Navratilova won a record nine Wimbledon ladies' singles titles.

Navratilova's Wimbledon victories came in 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1990. She also reached the final 12 times, including nine consecutive finals from 1982 through 1990, making her record one of the defining achievements in the tournament's history.

Her final Wimbledon title arrived in 1990, when she defeated Zina Garrison 6–4, 6–1. That victory gave Navratilova her ninth singles crown and her 18th major singles title. She was 33 at the time and remained one of the sport's most effective grass-court players because of her left-handed serve, attacking style and instinctive movement to the net.

The question concerns Wimbledon singles titles, not total Wimbledon trophies. Navratilova won additional Wimbledon championships in doubles and mixed doubles, and her overall major-title record is much larger. Serena Williams and Steffi Graf are among the closest modern comparisons, but neither surpassed Navratilova's nine women's singles titles.
