Which player scored the winning try in the 1989 NSWRL Grand Final?

The story behind the answer

Steve Jackson scored the winning try in the 1989 NSWRL Grand Final.

Steve Jackson scored Canberra’s winning try in the 1989 NSWRL Grand Final against Balmain Tigers. His extra-time try completed the Raiders’ 19–14 victory and secured the club’s first premiership.

The decisive sequence followed a field goal by Canberra’s John Ferguson, which put the Raiders ahead in extra time. Jackson then crossed to turn a tense contest into one of the most memorable finishes in Australian rugby league history. The match was played at the Sydney Football Stadium on 24 September 1989.

Jackson was not the star name most associated with Canberra’s emerging team, which included Mal Meninga, Laurie Daley and Ricky Stuart. That is why the try is sometimes incorrectly attributed to one of those players. Jackson’s score, however, is the defining individual moment of the final.
