Which player scored the highest individual score in an IPL innings?

The story behind the answer

Chris Gayle scored the highest individual score in an IPL innings: an unbeaten 175 for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Gayle made the record on 23 April 2013 against Pune Warriors India at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. He reached his century from only 30 balls and finished on 175 not out from 66 deliveries, striking 13 fours and 17 sixes. RCB made 263/5, then the highest team total in IPL history.

The innings remains the IPL’s highest individual score. It is also one of the defining performances of the competition’s early period, when Gayle’s immense power made him the league’s most feared T20 opener. His score eclipsed Brendon McCullum’s unbeaten 158 from the IPL’s first match in 2008.

A common mix-up is confusing this record with Gayle’s 175 being his highest score in all professional cricket or with the record for sixes in one IPL innings. Those are related but separate statistical categories: Gayle also hit 17 sixes in this knock, a record for an IPL innings at the time.
