Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s 99th-minute penalty against Newcastle United on the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
Liverpool drew 2–2 with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday 23 August 2026. Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time, rescuing a point for Liverpool in one of the weekend’s most dramatic finishes.
Newcastle had taken an early lead through Anthony Elanga, and Cody Gakpo equalised for Liverpool in the second half. Joe Willock then restored Newcastle’s advantage before Liverpool won a late penalty after Victor Muñoz was fouled in the area.
The match also included tributes to Kevin Keegan, who had played for both clubs and managed Newcastle. Liverpool were beginning life under new head coach Andoni Iraola, while Newcastle had appointed Matthias Jaissle after Eddie Howe’s departure. The draw meant both clubs opened their campaigns with one point.
