Which player scored Hull City’s first goal in its 2–0 opening-weekend win over Manchester United?

The story behind the answer

Semi Ajayi scored Hull City’s first goal in its 2–0 opening-weekend win over Manchester United.

Ajayi struck in the 17th minute at MKM Stadium, putting Hull ahead in the first Saturday match of the season. The defender reacted after Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens had tipped an Oli McBurnie effort onto the post.

Nobel Mendy added Hull’s second goal seven minutes before half-time, heading in a free-kick delivered by Regan Slater. Both Hull goals therefore came before the interval, giving the promoted side a commanding position.

The victory was historically significant for Hull. It was the club’s first Premier League victory over Manchester United and its first league win against the Red Devils since 1974, when the clubs met in the old Second Division.
