Which player scored an NHL-record 92 goals in the 1981–82 regular season?

The story behind the answer

Wayne Gretzky scored an NHL-record 92 goals for the Edmonton Oilers in the 1981–82 regular season.

Gretzky reached 92 goals in 80 games, breaking the record of 76 set by Phil Esposito with the Boston Bruins in 1970–71. He also recorded 120 assists that season, giving him 212 points, another NHL record that stood as the league’s single-season benchmark for decades.

The 1981–82 campaign was Gretzky’s third full NHL season. He had already won the Hart Memorial Trophy and Art Ross Trophy, but the 92-goal season made him the first player to surpass 200 points in a season.

Gretzky’s total is often confused with his 50 goals in 39 games, achieved the previous season, and his 894 career goals. Those are separate records from his 1981–82 single-season goal mark.
