Reggie Leach scored a record 19 goals for the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1976 Stanley Cup playoffs.
Leach’s 19-goal performance remains the NHL record for goals by one player in a single postseason. He reached the total while Philadelphia advanced to the Stanley Cup Final, where the Flyers were swept by the Montreal Canadiens in four games.
Known as the “Rifle,” Leach scored at least one goal in each of Philadelphia’s first 10 playoff games that spring. He finished the postseason with 19 goals in 16 games, including five goals in one game against the Boston Bruins during the semifinals. His scoring earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
The record is different from the single-season regular-season goals record and from the playoff points record. It counts only goals scored during one Stanley Cup playoff tournament, and it has survived later postseason formats with more games available.
