Which player scored 76 goals as an NHL rookie, the league rookie record?

The story behind the answer

Teemu Selänne scored 76 goals as an NHL rookie, setting the league record in 1992–93.

The Finnish forward achieved the mark with the Winnipeg Jets. He also added 56 assists for 132 points, won the Calder Memorial Trophy, and became one of the most productive first-year players in professional hockey history.

Selänne’s 76 goals surpassed Mike Bossy’s previous rookie record of 53, set with the New York Islanders in 1977–78. The record has remained intact despite several later rookies producing outstanding seasons.

Selänne’s debut was especially notable because he entered the NHL at age 22 after developing professionally in Finland. He later won the Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007 and finished his career with 684 regular-season goals.
