Which player recorded 199 points in the 1988–89 NHL regular season?

The story behind the answer

Mario Lemieux recorded 199 points in the 1988–89 NHL regular season.

Playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Lemieux scored 85 goals and added 114 assists in 76 games. He led the NHL in both goals and total points and won the Art Ross Trophy. His 199-point season remains the second-highest single-season total in league history, behind Wayne Gretzky’s 215 points in 1985–86.

Lemieux’s campaign was remarkable because he produced nearly 2.62 points per game. He also led Pittsburgh to the Wales Conference Final, though the Penguins did not win the Stanley Cup that season.

The season helped establish Lemieux as Gretzky’s principal scoring rival. Injuries later limited his playing time, but he returned from retirement in 2000 and became the first player to win the Hart Trophy after returning from retirement.
