Which player kicked the winning drop goal in the 2003 Rugby World Cup final?

The story behind the answer

Jonny Wilkinson kicked the winning drop goal in the 2003 Rugby World Cup final.

The final between England and Australia was played at Stadium Australia in Sydney on 22 November 2003. The match was tied 14–14 after 80 minutes, so it went into extra time. Wilkinson then kicked a drop goal in the second period of extra time, giving England a 20–17 victory.

Wilkinson’s kick became one of the defining moments in Rugby World Cup history. He also scored England’s other points in the final through penalties and a conversion. His total of 15 points made him central to England’s first men’s Rugby World Cup title.

A drop goal is scored when a player drops the ball onto the ground and kicks it immediately as it rises. In rugby union it is worth three points. It differs from a conversion, which follows a try, and from a penalty goal, which follows an infringement.
