Which player is the only non-Asian man to win Olympic table tennis singles gold?

The story behind the answer

Jan-Ove Waldner is the only non-Asian man to win Olympic table tennis singles gold.

The Swedish star won the men’s singles title at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He defeated France’s Jean-Philippe Gatien in the final and became the first European Olympic champion in table tennis men’s singles. Waldner’s victory remains unique because every other men’s singles Olympic champion has represented an Asian country.

Waldner reached another Olympic singles final at Sydney 2000, where he won the silver medal. He competed at six Olympic Games, an exceptional longevity record in elite table tennis, and was widely nicknamed “the Mozart of table tennis” for his touch and tactical control.

The distinction concerns men’s singles only. European players have won Olympic medals in team and doubles formats, and Sweden has enjoyed notable team success. The record is also separate from the world championships, where European men such as Waldner and Sweden’s other champions have won singles titles.
