Which player became the first non-Asian Olympic men’s singles champion in table tennis?
Answer
Jan-Ove Waldner
Answer
Jan-Ove Waldner
Jan-Ove Waldner became the first non-Asian Olympic men’s singles champion in table tennis.
The Swedish star won the title at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He defeated France’s Jean-Philippe Gatien in the final and became the first European to win Olympic men’s singles gold in the sport. His achievement ended the early Olympic dominance of Asian players in the event.
Waldner had already been a world-class player before Barcelona. He won the World Championship singles title in 1989 and was known for unusually complete technique, touch, anticipation and tactical variety.
He is sometimes called the “Mozart of table tennis,” although that nickname is informal. Waldner also won an Olympic silver medal in men’s singles at Seoul 1988 and team silver at Barcelona 1992.
