Which play features the characters Viola and Duke Orsino?
Answer
Twelfth Night
Answer
Twelfth Night
Viola and Duke Orsino are central characters in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Viola is separated from her twin brother Sebastian in a shipwreck and disguises herself as a young man named Cesario, entering Orsino’s service in the fictional land of Illyria.
Orsino is in love with Countess Olivia, so he sends Cesario to speak to her on his behalf. Olivia instead falls in love with Cesario, while Viola—still disguised—falls in love with Orsino. This creates the play’s famous romantic triangle: Viola loves Orsino, Orsino loves Olivia, and Olivia loves Cesario.
The mistaken identities become even more complicated when Sebastian appears, because he is Viola’s identical twin. Olivia mistakes Sebastian for Cesario, while other characters react to the confusion in comic ways. The play is therefore often remembered not just for its romance, but for its exploration of disguise, gender performance, desire and mistaken identity.
Twelfth Night was probably written around 1601–1602. The other listed plays do not feature this particular pair: Viola and Orsino belong unmistakably to Shakespeare’s festive romantic comedy.
