Which platform was Rocket League first released on as a free PS Plus title?

The story behind the answer

Rocket League was first released as a free PlayStation Plus title on PlayStation 4. Its July 2015 launch placed the game in the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection, giving subscribers immediate access on Sony’s console.

The game also launched on Windows at the same time, but the PC version was sold rather than distributed as that month’s PlayStation Plus offering. This distinction is why PlayStation 4 is the canonical answer to the question, even though PC players were among Rocket League’s earliest users.

The PlayStation Plus launch helped Rocket League build a large audience unusually quickly. Psyonix reported a major influx of players soon after release, creating server-capacity challenges and accelerating the game’s early visibility.

Rocket League later expanded to Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, and it eventually became free-to-play across supported platforms in September 2020. That later change is separate from its original 2015 launch, when the PS4 edition’s free PS Plus availability was a major part of its introduction.
