TikTok popularized the annual “august” memory-montage trend.
The trend uses Taylor Swift’s song as an audio backdrop for short videos built from saved summer memories. Creators commonly assemble photographs or video clips of trips, friends, sunsets, and everyday moments, then edit them to the song’s wistful late-summer mood.
TikTok’s format helped the trend recur annually because sounds can be reused by many creators and rediscovered when the calendar reaches August. The practice then spread across other social platforms, but TikTok is the platform most closely associated with the trend’s early visibility and recurring format.
This trend is separate from the song’s original release campaign. “august” came out in 2020, while the recurring social-media practice developed afterward as listeners connected the lyrics about August slipping away with personal summer footage.
