Which planet is known for its rings?

The planet known for its rings is Saturn. Although several planets have ring systems, Saturn’s rings are by far the most prominent and easiest to see, making Saturn the standard answer to this question.

Saturn’s rings are made mostly of countless pieces of water ice, along with dust and rocky material. The particles range from tiny grains to objects several metres across. The rings are extremely wide but surprisingly thin compared with their diameter, and gaps between them are shaped partly by the gravitational effects of Saturn’s moons.

Galileo first observed Saturn’s unusual appearance in 1610, but his telescope could not resolve the rings clearly. In 1655, Christiaan Huygens correctly proposed that Saturn was surrounded by a ring. The planet has seven main ring groups, commonly labelled A through G, with the Cassini Division separating the A and B rings.

Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune also have rings, but they are much darker, fainter and harder to see. Saturn’s rings are not solid surfaces for spacecraft or people to stand on; they are a vast orbiting collection of separate particles.
