Cars 2 was the first film in the Cars series to use 3D stereoscopic presentation.
Cars 2 was released in 2011 and was presented in stereoscopic 3D, allowing audiences to see the film’s racing scenes and international locations with added depth. The original Cars, released in 2006, was made before the series adopted that presentation format, while Cars 3 followed in 2017.
The sequel expands the setting beyond Radiator Springs. Lightning McQueen competes in the World Grand Prix, traveling to Tokyo, Porto Corsa, and London. Mater’s accidental involvement in espionage gives the movie a spy-adventure structure, with Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell joining the cast.
Cars 2 was directed by John Lasseter and Brad Lewis. Its use of 3D is separate from the film’s animation technology: the movie was computer-animated like other Pixar features, while stereoscopic presentation refers to how depth was created for theatrical viewing.
