Which Pixar film was the first feature-length sequel in the Toy Story studio’s Cars series?

The story behind the answer

Cars 2 was Pixar’s first feature-length sequel in the Cars series.

Released in 2011, Cars 2 follows the 2006 original Cars and expands its story beyond Radiator Springs. Lightning McQueen enters the World Grand Prix, while Mater becomes entangled in an international spy adventure involving secret agents and a fuel conspiracy.

The sequel was directed by John Lasseter and co-directed by Brad Lewis. It is notably structured more like a global action and espionage film than the quieter small-town road story of the first Cars.

Cars 2 was followed by Cars 3 in 2017. Pixar also expanded the franchise through shorts and television material, but Cars 2 remains the second theatrical feature in the main Cars film series.
