Cars 3 is the first Cars movie to feature Lightning McQueen as a mentor.
In Cars 3, Lightning faces the rise of technologically advanced racers led by Jackson Storm. His declining competitiveness forces him to consider what he can contribute beyond winning races himself. That question leads him to train Cruz Ramirez and eventually support her as a racer.
The original Cars presents Lightning as a young competitor learning from Doc Hudson, while Cars 2 focuses on the World Grand Prix and Mater’s espionage adventure. Neither film gives Lightning a sustained mentor role comparable to his relationship with Cruz.
Cars 3 reverses the original mentor-student pattern. Doc once taught Lightning how to race with greater skill and perspective; Lightning later passes those lessons to Cruz. The film’s ending keeps Lightning involved in racing while showing him move toward a coaching and team-support role.
