Professor Zündapp is an internationally wanted German scientist who develops the weaponized Allinol plot in Cars 2. He works with the film’s criminal conspiracy to manipulate the World Grand Prix and discredit alternative fuel technology.
The character is a compact, old-fashioned-looking car whose formal name and visual style evoke fictional European scientists and spies. Thomas Kretschmann provides his voice in the English version. The film shifts the series from a small-town racing story toward an international espionage adventure.
Cars 2 was released in 2011 and takes Lightning McQueen and Mater to races in Japan, Italy, and England. Mater becomes entangled in the spy story because agents mistake his accidental observations and eccentric behavior for deliberate undercover skill.
