Cars 2 was Pixar's first feature film not nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
The sequel was released in 2011 and followed Mater and Lightning McQueen through the World Grand Prix and an espionage plot. Although it was commercially successful, it received a more mixed critical response than many earlier Pixar films. Its omission from the Best Animated Feature lineup ended Pixar's run of nominations in the category since the award was introduced.
Cars 2 still received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature? No: it did not receive that nomination. This fact is often confused with the film's awards success in other areas or with Cars, which was nominated for the same category in 2006. The distinction concerns the Academy Awards, not every animation award.
