Which Pixar director directed Cars 3, his feature-film debut?

The story behind the answer

Brian Fee directed Cars 3, making it his feature-film directorial debut.

Fee had worked at Pixar for years before directing the third Cars film. He was a storyboard artist on earlier Pixar productions, including Cars and Cars 2, and his familiarity with the characters helped him guide the franchise into a new stage. Cars 3 was released in 2017.

The film follows Lightning McQueen as he faces Jackson Storm, a technologically advanced racer from a younger generation. Its story returns to the themes of mentorship, competition, and changing technology while introducing Cruz Ramirez as a major character.

Brian Fee should not be confused with John Lasseter, who directed Cars and Cars 2, or with Brad Bird, who directed The Incredibles and Ratatouille. Fee later co-directed the Pixar short The Blue Umbrella before taking on further animation work.
