Cars 2 sends Lightning McQueen into an international spy adventure.
Released in 2011, Cars 2 follows McQueen as he competes in the World Grand Prix, a fictional international racing competition. Mater becomes involved in a spy plot after being mistaken for an American secret agent, shifting the series from a small-town sports story toward global espionage and action.
The film visits locations including Tokyo, Porto Corsa, and London. Its spy storyline introduces secret agents Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell, while the racing plot centers on an alternative fuel called Allinol.
Cars 3 returned to a more character-focused racing story about McQueen's rivalry with Jackson Storm. Planes is a separate animated franchise set in the same broad world of vehicles, while Cars Toons is a collection of short films rather than a feature sequel. Cars 2 was directed by John Lasseter and Brad Lewis.
