Pixar’s Cars features Randy Newman’s song “Our Town.”
“Our Town” plays during a montage showing Radiator Springs changing after Lightning McQueen arrives. The song reflects the town’s history and its decline after the interstate highway bypasses the old Route 66 community. Newman wrote both the music and lyrics, connecting the song to the film’s themes of memory, place, and renewal.
The song was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Cars also includes other recognizable songs, such as “Life Is a Highway,” performed by Rascal Flatts, and “Real Gone,” performed by Sheryl Crow. These songs helped give the film a strong road-movie and Americana identity.
“Our Town” is associated with the first Cars film, not Cars 2 or Cars 3. Randy Newman also composed the scores for many Pixar productions, including Toy Story and Monsters, Inc., but this particular song belongs to Cars.
