Cars 2 was the first Pixar Cars film to feature Lightning McQueen racing in Japan.
The sequel opens the World Grand Prix in Tokyo, where McQueen competes on a specially designed city circuit. The setting expands the franchise beyond the American Southwest of the first film and introduces an international championship with races on three continents.
Cars 2’s Japanese sequence combines racing with the movie’s spy storyline. Mater’s accidental involvement with Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell unfolds around the Tokyo event, while McQueen faces competitors including Francesco Bernoulli. The film’s production design incorporates recognizable elements of Tokyo, including its dense urban environment and neon-lit streets.
The original Cars focuses on Radiator Springs and American stock-car racing. Cars 3 returns mainly to the United States and centers on McQueen’s struggle against Jackson Storm. Cars on the Road is a later television series, not the film that introduced the Tokyo race.
