Cars 2 was the first Pixar Cars film to receive a theatrical 3D release.
The 2011 sequel was produced and released in stereoscopic 3D, allowing audiences to see the World Grand Prix and its international locations with added depth. The format was especially suited to the film’s fast races, aerial action, and elaborate spy sequences.
The original Cars was released theatrically in 2006 in standard 2D presentation, although later home-video and re-release technologies offered additional formats. Cars 3 followed in 2017 and also received 3D presentations in markets where that format was available.
Cars 2’s 3D presentation accompanied a major change in scope for the franchise. Instead of concentrating mainly on Radiator Springs, the film moves through Tokyo, Italy, and London, combining racing with a global spy plot led by Finn McMissile and Mater.
