Cars 2 features the World Grand Prix and an international spy conspiracy.
The film follows Lightning McQueen as he enters a three-race international competition held in locations including Tokyo, Porto Corsa, and London. Mater accompanies him and becomes involved with British intelligence agents Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell. Their investigation concerns a campaign against Allinol, a synthetic alternative fuel promoted through the race.
The story was designed as a spy adventure as well as a racing film, giving it a noticeably different tone from the original Cars. Mater’s mistaken reputation as a secret agent drives much of the comedy, while the conspiracy supplies the film’s action plot. The race and espionage stories eventually intersect at the London finale.
Cars is centered on McQueen’s stay in Radiator Springs, and Cars 3 focuses on his rivalry with Jackson Storm. Lightyear is unrelated to the Cars universe. These distinctions make Cars 2 the specific answer when both the World Grand Prix and spy conspiracy are mentioned.
