Which Pixar Cars character is a 1951 Hudson Hornet?

The story behind the answer

Doc Hudson is the Pixar Cars character based on a 1951 Hudson Hornet.

Doc Hudson is a retired racing champion who lives in Radiator Springs. His vehicle design is modeled on the Hudson Hornet, an American automobile associated with stock-car racing in the early 1950s. The real Hudson Hornet became famous for its success on NASCAR circuits, particularly with the “Fabulous Hudson Hornet” driven by Herb Thomas.

In the film, Doc initially hides his racing history from Lightning McQueen. He eventually reveals that he won three Piston Cups before a crash ended his career and left him feeling forgotten by the racing world. His experience allows him to become McQueen’s mentor.

Doc is not modeled on a modern race car. Lightning McQueen is a fictional custom racer, while Strip Weathers is designed as a Plymouth Superbird-inspired stock car. Doc’s identity therefore combines a specific real automobile design with an original fictional racing biography.
