Which physicist confirmed parity violation in the 1956 Wu experiment?
Answer
Chien-Shiung Wu
Answer
Chien-Shiung Wu
Chien-Shiung Wu confirmed parity violation in her landmark 1956–57 experiment on radioactive cobalt-60 decay.
Parity symmetry assumes that a physical process should look the same in a mirror-image version. Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen-Ning Yang proposed that the weak nuclear force might violate this principle, and Wu designed a precise low-temperature experiment to test the idea.
Her polarized cobalt-60 nuclei emitted electrons preferentially in one direction, demonstrating that mirror symmetry was not conserved in weak interactions. The result transformed particle physics and supported the work of Lee and Yang.
Lee and Yang received the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics, while Wu was not awarded the prize. The experiment is widely known as the Wu experiment and remains a classic example of experimental particle physics.
