Which British zoologist studied chimpanzees for decades at Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park?

The story behind the answer

Jane Goodall studied chimpanzees for decades at Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park.

Goodall began her field research at Gombe in 1960 after traveling to what was then Tanganyika. Her observations showed that wild chimpanzees make and use simple tools, including modified stems used to extract termites from mounds.

Her research also documented complex chimpanzee social relationships, hunting behavior, aggression and cooperation. At first, she identified individual chimpanzees by giving them names rather than numbers, an approach that differed from the conventions used by many researchers at the time.

Gombe is in western Tanzania near Lake Tanganyika. Goodall’s work is sometimes mixed up with Dian Fossey’s studies of mountain gorillas in Rwanda or Birutė Galdikas’s research on orangutans in Borneo. Goodall later founded the Jane Goodall Institute and became a prominent conservation advocate.
