Answer
And now for something completely different
The phrase first appeared in the episode “Sex and Violence”: “And now for something completely different.”
“Sex and Violence” was the second episode of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, broadcast in October 1969. The line introduces “A Man with Three Buttocks,” abruptly switching from one bizarre sketch to another. That deliberately mechanical transition became one of the programme’s defining recurring devices.
The wording is often confused with “Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition,” which first appeared much later, in Series 2. “Nudge nudge, wink wink” belongs to the “Nudge Nudge” sketch in the third episode, while “My brain hurts” is associated with the show’s broader comic catchphrase tradition rather than this debut.
The line also gave its name to the 1971 Python compilation film, which re-created and rearranged sketches from the television series for cinema audiences, especially in the United States.
