Which photographer made the famous 1918 portrait of Georgia O'Keeffe with a dark background?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz made the famous 1918 portrait of Georgia O'Keeffe with a dark background. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, producing a large body of images that documented and shaped public perceptions of her.

Stieglitz was a pioneering American photographer, gallery owner, and promoter of modern art. He first encountered O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings through the photographer and art instructor Anita Pollitzer. He exhibited her work at his New York gallery and later married her in 1924.

The portrait is part of a much larger photographic series rather than an isolated image. Stieglitz made hundreds of photographs of O'Keeffe between 1917 and 1937. Other famous photographers, including Paul Strand and Ansel Adams, were also associated with American modernism, but Stieglitz was the central photographer in O'Keeffe's documented portrait history.
