Which photographer founded the New York gallery that first exhibited Georgia O'Keeffe's work?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz founded the New York gallery that first exhibited Georgia O'Keeffe's work.

Stieglitz was a pioneering photographer, publisher, and promoter of modern art. In 1905 he and Edward Steichen helped establish the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, later known as 291 because of its address at 291 Fifth Avenue.

Anita Pollitzer showed Stieglitz some of O'Keeffe's abstract drawings in 1916. He arranged for her work to be exhibited at 291 without her prior permission, and the presentation introduced her to the New York art world. O'Keeffe later moved to New York and became both Stieglitz's partner and wife.

Stieglitz's importance went beyond his relationship with O'Keeffe. Through his galleries and publications, he promoted European modernists and emerging American artists. The gallery name 291 is therefore often associated with both photography and the first public presentation of O'Keeffe's art in New York.
