Which photographer founded the gallery known as An American Place, where Georgia O'Keeffe exhibited?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz founded An American Place, the gallery where Georgia O'Keeffe exhibited.

An American Place opened in New York in 1929 and was Stieglitz's final gallery. It followed several earlier spaces through which he promoted modern European and American art, including the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession and 291. O'Keeffe was a central artist in his program.

The gallery presented painting, photography, sculpture, and works by artists Stieglitz considered important to modern American culture. O'Keeffe's relationship with the gallery was especially significant because it gave her a stable exhibition connection in New York while she developed her flower paintings, city images, and abstract works.

The name can be confused with O'Keeffe's later museum, but the two institutions were unrelated. An American Place was a commercial art gallery established by Stieglitz, whereas the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum opened in Santa Fe decades later, in 1997.
