Which photographer first exhibited Georgia O’Keeffe’s drawings at his New York gallery?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz first exhibited Georgia O’Keeffe’s drawings at his New York gallery.

Anita Pollitzer showed O’Keeffe’s charcoal abstractions to Stieglitz in 1916. He recognized their importance and displayed them at his gallery, commonly known as 291 after its address at 291 Fifth Avenue. The exhibition introduced O’Keeffe to influential figures in the New York art world.

This event was pivotal because O’Keeffe was then teaching art in Texas and had not yet become a nationally recognized painter. Stieglitz’s support helped establish her public career, although she later resisted interpretations that reduced her work to biographical or sexual symbolism.

Stieglitz was a photographer, publisher, and promoter of modern art. Paul Strand, Edward Steichen, and Man Ray were also important photographers, but they did not make this first gallery presentation of O’Keeffe’s drawings.
