Which photographer and gallery owner married Georgia O'Keeffe in 1924?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz married Georgia O'Keeffe in 1924.

Stieglitz was an influential American photographer, publisher, and gallery owner who promoted modern art in the United States. He first encountered O'Keeffe’s work after a friend showed him some of her abstract charcoal drawings. In 1916, he exhibited them at his New York gallery, 291, without initially knowing the artist personally.

Their relationship became both personal and professional. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, producing hundreds of portraits and studies over several decades. He also helped bring her work to public attention through exhibitions and his network of artists, writers, and collectors.

They married on December 24, 1924. The marriage lasted until Stieglitz’s death in 1946, although O'Keeffe spent increasing amounts of time in New Mexico from the 1930s onward. Their relationship is important to art history, but O'Keeffe’s mature reputation rests on her own paintings and artistic decisions.
