Which photographer and gallery owner did Georgia O'Keeffe marry?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe married photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz.

Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings in 1916 and exhibited them at his New York gallery, 291, without initially meeting her. Their correspondence developed into a close personal and professional relationship, and they married in 1924.

Stieglitz was a major figure in American photography and modern art. Through his galleries and publications, he promoted European modernists as well as artists working in the United States. He also made hundreds of photographs of O'Keeffe, especially during the 1920s.

The marriage lasted until Stieglitz died in 1946, but the couple spent much of their later married life apart because O'Keeffe increasingly lived and worked in New Mexico. Their relationship remains central to accounts of both artists, though O'Keeffe maintained an independent artistic identity.
