Which photographer and gallerist represented Georgia O’Keeffe at his gallery, An American Place?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz represented Georgia O’Keeffe at his gallery An American Place.

An American Place was Stieglitz’s final New York gallery. He opened it in 1929 at 509 Madison Avenue after earlier galleries, including 291 and the Intimate Gallery. The gallery presented modern American artists and became a principal venue for O’Keeffe’s work during the later part of Stieglitz’s career.

O’Keeffe’s exhibitions there included paintings of flowers, New York architecture, and other subjects associated with her developing style. Stieglitz also presented work by artists such as Arthur Dove, John Marin, and Marsden Hartley. The gallery’s name emphasized Stieglitz’s interest in establishing a distinct American modernism.

An American Place is sometimes mistaken for the Intimate Gallery, which Stieglitz operated immediately before it. Both galleries were important, but An American Place opened in 1929 and continued until Stieglitz’s death in 1946. O’Keeffe later became responsible for managing his estate and preserving his artistic legacy.
