Georgia O'Keeffe was married to photographer and art dealer Alfred Stieglitz.
Stieglitz first encountered O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings after the artist Anita Pollitzer showed them to him. He exhibited her work in 1916 at his New York gallery, 291, before the two began a personal relationship.
They married in 1924. Stieglitz promoted O'Keeffe's work extensively and made hundreds of photographs of her, while O'Keeffe developed an independent artistic reputation through paintings of flowers, cityscapes, and landscapes.
Stieglitz was not only a photographer but also an important advocate for modern art in the United States. He died in 1946, and O'Keeffe became the executor of his estate.
