Which Philadelphia building is now known as Independence Hall, where the Declaration was debated?

The story behind the answer

The Philadelphia building now known as Independence Hall was the Pennsylvania State House.

The Pennsylvania State House was completed in 1753 and served as the seat of Pennsylvania’s colonial government. During the American Revolution, the Second Continental Congress met there and debated the question of independence. The Declaration of Independence was adopted in the building in 1776.

The structure later became known as Independence Hall, a name reflecting its association with both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. It stands within Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia.

Visitors sometimes confuse Independence Hall with nearby Carpenters’ Hall, where the First Continental Congress met in 1774, or Congress Hall, where the federal government met in the 1790s. The building’s original governmental name was Pennsylvania State House.
