Independence Hall in Philadelphia is the building most closely associated with the Declaration of Independence commemorated by America250.
The building was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House. The Second Continental Congress met there during the Revolutionary era, and delegates debated and adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The U.S. Constitution was also drafted and signed there in 1787.
The building’s original name was the Pennsylvania State House; Independence Hall became the familiar later name. It stands within Independence National Historical Park and is recognized as a major symbol of American founding history.
Independence Hall is sometimes confused with the Liberty Bell Center. The Liberty Bell is displayed nearby, but the bell and the hall are separate historic attractions. The hall is the place associated with Congress’s debates and formal actions.
