Which Philadelphia building is known as the place where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and signed?

The story behind the answer

Independence Hall is the Philadelphia building where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and signed.

The building was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House. It became the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress during the American Revolution, including the debates that produced the Declaration of Independence.

The Constitutional Convention met there in 1787. Delegates debated the structure of the new federal government and signed the Constitution on September 17 of that year. The building’s Assembly Room remains the best-known interior associated with both founding documents.

Independence Hall was originally called the Pennsylvania State House; the present name became common after the Declaration made the site nationally important. It is part of Independence National Historical Park, which also includes the Liberty Bell Center and other historic locations in Philadelphia.
