Independence Hall hosted the Second Continental Congress during the Declaration of Independence debate.
Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Independence Hall was completed in 1753 as the Pennsylvania State House. The Second Continental Congress met there while discussing and adopting the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
The building is also associated with the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution. The Constitutional Convention met in the same assembly room in 1787, making the site important to both independence and the creation of the federal government.
The structure was originally called the Pennsylvania State House. “Independence Hall” became its familiar name because of its connection with the Declaration. The Liberty Bell was housed nearby, but it is a separate object and not the name of the building.
