Eli Lilly developed the weight-management drug Zepbound.
Eli Lilly markets Zepbound, whose active ingredient is tirzepatide, for chronic weight management in eligible adults. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Zepbound in November 2023. Tirzepatide is also sold under the name Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes treatment.
The medicine acts on receptors for GIP and GLP-1, hormones involved in appetite and blood-sugar regulation. Strong demand for obesity and diabetes medicines helped make Eli Lilly one of the world’s most valuable pharmaceutical companies by market capitalization.
Zepbound is often confused with Wegovy, which contains semaglutide and is made by Novo Nordisk. The drugs belong to the same broad treatment area but contain different active ingredients and are made by different companies.
