Which pharmaceutical company developed the diabetes medicine Ozempic?

The story behind the answer

Novo Nordisk developed the diabetes medicine Ozempic.

Ozempic is the brand name for semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist used with diet and exercise to improve blood-sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Novo Nordisk developed and markets the medicine; the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Ozempic in 2017.

Semaglutide is also used in other products and under other brand names. Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management in eligible patients, while Rybelsus is an oral semaglutide product for type 2 diabetes. These products are related, but their approved uses, formulations, and dosing schedules are not identical.

Novo Nordisk is a Danish pharmaceutical company with deep expertise in diabetes care, including insulin. Because its medicines became widely discussed in both diabetes and obesity treatment, the company has often appeared in lists of the world’s largest companies by market capitalization.
