Novo Nordisk developed semaglutide, which is marketed as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes.
Novo Nordisk is a Danish pharmaceutical company with historic expertise in diabetes care. Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, commonly abbreviated GLP-1. Ozempic is the brand name for a once-weekly injectable formulation used with diet and exercise to improve blood-sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Semaglutide is also sold under other brand names for different approved uses. Wegovy is associated with chronic weight management, while Rybelsus is an oral semaglutide product for type 2 diabetes. The products are not interchangeable simply because they contain the same active ingredient; approved indications, doses and formulations differ.
Eli Lilly is a frequent mix-up because it makes another major GLP-1 medicine, tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and Zepbound for weight management. Novo Nordisk’s growth in diabetes and obesity medicines has made it one of Europe’s most valuable public companies.
