Eli Lilly and Company markets tirzepatide under the brand name Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and under the name Zepbound for chronic weight management in eligible patients. Tirzepatide acts on two hormonal pathways, GIP and GLP-1, that influence blood sugar regulation and appetite.
The success of these medicines helped make Eli Lilly one of the world’s most valuable pharmaceutical companies by market capitalization. Their popularity also contributed to a broader surge in investor interest in medicines targeting obesity and metabolic disease.
Mounjaro and Zepbound contain the same active ingredient, but their approved uses and product labeling differ. They should not be confused with semaglutide medicines such as Ozempic and Wegovy, which are associated with Novo Nordisk and act primarily through the GLP-1 pathway.
