Eli Lilly developed Mounjaro, the diabetes and obesity drug whose commercial success helped make the company one of the world’s largest by market capitalization.
Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved in 2022 for adults with type 2 diabetes alongside diet and exercise. Tirzepatide acts on both GIP and GLP-1 pathways. Eli Lilly later marketed the same active ingredient for chronic weight management in the United States under the name Zepbound.
The company was founded in 1876 by Colonel Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, Indiana. Its portfolio includes medicines for diabetes, cancer, immunology, neuroscience, and other conditions.
Eli Lilly’s valuation has been influenced by expectations for demand for tirzepatide and other medicines. Mounjaro and Zepbound are related products but have different approved indications and brand names, so they should not be treated as interchangeable answers.
