Novo Nordisk became Europe's most valuable company by market capitalization during the 2023 weight-loss-drug boom.
The Danish pharmaceutical company overtook France's LVMH in September 2023 as demand expectations for its diabetes and obesity medicines drove its share price higher. Its valuation was propelled especially by the success and anticipated growth of semaglutide products.
Novo Nordisk markets semaglutide for diabetes as Ozempic and for chronic weight management as Wegovy. These products belong to the GLP-1 class, which can help regulate blood glucose and reduce appetite, although their approved uses and dosages differ.
Market capitalization rankings change whenever share prices move, so this was a time-specific milestone rather than a permanent title. It also does not mean Novo Nordisk was Europe's largest company by revenue or employee count.
